Portal Theatre launched in 2013 and aims to devise and present new plays in collaboration with Company members. Our first play, No Belles, played for the month of August 2014 at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival receiving great reviews, and then toured the Canadian Fringe Festival over the Summer of 2015. No Belles performed in Washington D.C. for the August 2017 American Chemical Society (ACS) conference (see our reviews) and in October 2017 in Edmonton, Canada for the Women in Scholarship, Engineering, Science and Technology (WISEST) conference. Session co-organizer Vera V. Mainz for ACS described No Belles as “one of the most effective means I have ever seen to communicate to nonscientists why one pursues a scientific career and why it matters,” Mainz added. “I believe everyone who attended reacted emotionally to one or all of the stories of the women scientists presented. I think ACS could do a great job of communicating these ideas to the public by coupling local section sponsorship of the No Belles performance to local middle schools and high schools.”
Our newest play, 73 Seconds, tells the stories of the day on January 28, 1986, when seven astronauts boarded the Space Shuttle Challenger, and for 73 seconds, flew into history while the entire world watched. 73 Seconds tells the stories of their lives (including the first teacher in the program, Christa McAuliffe), the media who covered the event, the children and teachers who watched it live, and the president who had to speak to the families and the nation. 73 Seconds tells the story of one of the defining moments of a generation.
